ALYS BEACH

One of the most renowned and well-appointed tourist destination cities along the gulf coast of Florida is found in Okaloosa County along US 98. While, officially billboarded as ‘The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village’, it is fair to say that the claim is only ‘mostly’ correct. Destin Florida—as a result of Destin Pass providing unparalleled access to the Gulf of Mexico—is indeed the epitome of a world-class deep sea / saltwater fishing industry and tourism destination. As for the term ‘village’ however… Destin has prospered into what might be more accurately referred to as a bonafide city. And while some might of course lament these winds and waves of change, know that those responsible for bringing Destin to it’s future did so like a boss. That all said, given that Destin Florida is still wildly charming and originally quaint in so many aspects— and because ‘The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village of a City’ is not nearly as catchy— it is certainly apt that the billboard remains. Few know that the majestic Destin Pass has a not-so-majestic origin. This magnificent hallmark of Destin Florida that single-handedly shaped and continues to shape and sustain it’s very culture, industry and way of life otherwise…came to being by the combination of two men with shovels and a hunch. In short, legend has it that two men had the idea of digging a trench from the Choctawhatchee Bay to the Gulf of Mexico several hundred yards away, in hopes that it would begin to flow enough that they would no longer have to carry their Jon boat over the coastal dunes in order to get some salt water fishing in. The hunch was correct. Maybe a little too correct. Imagine their surprise when the next day their concept of a slew…was nearly as wide as Destin Pass today. While hardly legal and certainly a dangerous and foolishly bold risk to abruptly slap two massive ecosystems head first into one another… the effort was executed in the innocent good intention of adventure and the result was fortuitous at minimum. Destin Florida is similar to it’s Bay County cousin Panama City Beach Florida in that it was formed over many decades. Both becoming the bustling resident and tourist gulf coastal hub-destinations they are by sustaining a focused intention over the years in offering their locals and tourists the perfect opportunity to live their best beach-life. In the case of Destin this looks like marinas; harbors; countless old and new residential developments and neighborhoods, Choctawhatchee Bay and Gulf front estates; townhouse, condominiums and apartment complexes; luxurious and modest hotels and motels; small and grand shopping centers; legendary nightlife and dining options; countless accesses to the Gulf of Mexico and the Choctawhatchee Bay; high ranking schools; and of course a full range of long established municipal and professional services. It’s interesting and somewhat comical to consider that all this and so much more came to be— at least perhaps in the magnitude and manner that it is— from a couple fellows with shovels having a ‘hold my beer’ moment. A short roll east from SR 393 along Scenic 30A just past iconic Goatfeathers Seafood Restaurant and Local's Catch Bar and Grill, an unassuming little road called East Cedar Bend heads south of 30A into the not so unassuming coastal dune lake front community of Draper Lake Coastal Village. This Southern Living Magazine cover-shot urban development is a 40 acre masterpiece set along the shore of Draper Lake. While immediately off of Scenic 30A, once inside the gates of Draper Lake Coastal Village you are immediately transported into a sanctuary of sorts. Inspired by turn of the century lakefront communities such as the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain, the driving concept for developing Draper Lake Coastal Village was to at length afford it's residents a tranquil, social community that not only aesthetically compliments the landscape but also functionally supports and sustains it's rare ecosystem. Draper Lake Coastal Village is most notably characterized to this effect by walkways and trails in and throughout a massive common greenspace, 2 boathouses funneling access into Draper Lake to specific entries—as well as a protected, undeveloped 100' buffer— in order to best preserve the Draper Lake shoreline and provide equal lake access opportunity to all of it's residents. Draper Lake Coastal Village features 2 pools, a 48' observation tower, great proximity to gulf coast beach accesses as well as an ideal proximity to Scenic 30A restaurants and merchants— and of course quick ingress / egress to US 98 via SR 393 and/or SR 83. DRAPER LAKE

In addition to it's incredible old-world residential and commercial charm, Blue Mountain Beach Florida is also a virtual pantheon of modern urban developments—and one of these communities, aptly titled The Retreat, has most certainly earned a seat at the head of the table. Most South Walton County coastal communities that achieve the feel of being especially private and secluded do so on the north side of Scenic 30A. The Retreat however was developed on a very unique stretch of this county road where it twists and winds away from the coast and back to accommodate the rise and fall of Blue Mountain's elevation. Hidden so deeply in these twists on the south side of the road, a passerby on Scenic 30A doesn't even see Draper Lake. It is this magnificently pristine 29 acre coastal dune lake, one of the larger of South Walton County's 15 such lakes that—along with 3000 feet of gulf frontage— is a mainstay feature of The Retreat. The Retreat's style of development is best summarized by a statement from long-time South Walton County local Tom Christ of Christ and Associates. He said,“The Retreat is special because it doesn’t really have one defined architectural style. Instead, it has traditional and contemporary styling as found in Bermudian, Caribbean, Low Country Louisiana, French and Spanish Colonial style architecture. I believe it to be the most interesting collection of homes along the beaches of 30A.” We couldn't agree more with Tom's observation of this unique fact that even further sets The Retreat apart from the rest of Scenic 30A's urban developments. Accessed along Scenic 30A less than a mile west of SR 83, Retreat Drive gently winds away from IT ALL skirting Draper Lake towards the Gulf Coast of Mexico into what could be called—by standard of luxury, privacy and picturesque grandeur— an entirely other world. This all being said, it is certainly worth a look down Retreat Drive if you have an interest in South Walton County real estate. THE RETREAT

Headed west along US 98 prior to reaching the Walton County / Okaloosa County line you'll find, geographically speaking, one of Walton County's last major coastal developments. And in the interest of a little word play… it is also, chronologically speaking, one of Walton County's FIRST major coastal developments— Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. The full story of Sandestin, located in Miramar Beach Florida, could be (and perhaps is) a book in and of itself. That being said, we will do our best to keep this description brief and you can give us a shout if you'd like to know more… or you could maybe just go find that book. If you do, grab us a copy. About a half a century ago the land that is now Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort saw it's first workers show up to begin expediting a developers vision. The South Walton County Florida tourism industry and resident population at the time wasn't starving by any means but it was slow and sleepy enough in those days that the vision for a mega-scale commercial, luxury residential and tourist destination project such as Sandestin certainly must have seemed bold if not perhaps a bit insane. As it turns out… it WAS bold but as for insane, not so much. In hindsight it was in fact brilliant.
